How to Care for and Fly Home with Your Mosaic Lamp

A Turkish mosaic lamp is made of glass, but it travels home safely far more often than people expect. The shade is set onto a solid glass form, so it is not fragile on its own, and a good wrap does the rest. Here is how to get it home in one piece, and how to keep it glowing once it is there.

Packing it for the journey

In a workshop, your lamp is wrapped in protective packaging before you leave. That means bubble wrap around the shade, the brass base and fitting kept separate, and the whole thing boxed or padded. If you buy one instead, ask the seller to pack it for flying specifically.

A few rules make the difference:

• Keep the base and shade separate if they detach, so they do not knock together.
• Cushion the hollow of the shade. A little soft packing inside supports the glass from within.
• Pad the corners of the box, because that is where knocks land.

Hand luggage or checked?

Carry-on is safest. A table-lamp-sized mosaic shade usually fits in cabin baggage, and keeping it with you avoids the rough handling of the hold. Wrapped well, it passes security fine. It is just glass and brass, with nothing prohibited.

If it must go in checked luggage, pack it in the centre of your case, cushioned on all sides by clothes, never against the shell. You can add a fragile tag, though it is wise not to rely on it.

For larger pieces such as floor lamps or chandeliers, shipping is often the calmer choice. Many studios and shops will arrange it for you.

Cleaning and care at home

Once it is home, a mosaic lamp asks very little:

• Dust it gently with a dry, soft brush or a microfibre cloth. The beads and seams catch dust, and a soft brush reaches between them.
• Avoid soaking it or using harsh sprays, since moisture can work into the grout and adhesive over time. If you need to, use a barely-damp cloth and dry it straight away.
• Use a low-wattage or LED bulb. It runs cooler, which is kinder to the glass and grout, and LED colour renders the glass beautifully.
• Keep it out of direct, prolonged sun, so the colours stay vivid for years.
